Vivian Lewin Field Study Endowment Award 2011 -2012
DEADLINE SEPTEMBER 30, 2011
To be awarded to meritorious MSE undergraduate students on a 3 year rotational cycle basis. This year the preference is the FACULTY OF ARTS. The award supports students who wish to take a McGill recognized field study abroad program OR have a pre-arranged independent course or honours course that involves field research abroad. The award is $500 per year.


Eligibility Requirements:
Students must be registered in one of the following programs:
  1. B.A. Faculty Program in Environment
  2. B.Sc. Major in Environment (in either the Faculty of Science or the Faculty of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences)
  3. The B.A. & Sc Interfaculty Program in Science.
  4. Students must be registered in one of the McGill recognized field study abroad programs OR have a pre-arranged independent course or honours course that involves field research abroad.
  5. Students must be of a high academic standing as indicated by a CGPA


Application Process: Students will be required to submit an application that includes ALL of the following:
  1. A copy of their most recent transcript.
  2. A 300 word summary of the research question or environmental problem being examined and the purpose of the field work OR a description of how the study abroad program will help in their career development.
  3. A short explanation or budget of how the money would be used to aid their proposed field work.
  4. Demonstration of registration (either through MINERVA or a letter from the course Professor that shows student's intent to register) in a course that requires field work as an element for evaluation in the course or one of the MSE associated Field Study Semesters. An additional letter from the course professor may be needed to confirm that the course requires field work abroad.

McGill School of Environment Undergraduate Research Grant

The McGill School of Environment invites applications for four awards of up to $1000 to support undergraduate research projects.
Eligibility
To be eligible, MSE students must be registered, both at the time of the application and throughout the duration of the award, in one of the following programs: BA Faculty Program in Environment, the BA&Sc Interdisciplinary Program in Environment, the BSc Major in Environment, the BSc(Agr Env) Major in Environment, or the Diploma in Environment. At the time of receiving the grant, students must provide proof of registration in ONE of the following courses:
ENVR 490, ENVR 491, ENVR 495, ENVR 496 and ENVR 497
The funds are designed to support interdisciplinary environmental research undertaken for course credit. The applicants must have made prior arrangement with an MSE Jointly Appointed Faculty, Faculty Lecturer or Associate Member (seewww.mcgill.ca/mse for up-to-date list) to supervise the project.
Use of Funds
The funds can be used to cover costs of materials and supplies, equipment, or travel to collect information. Funds cannot be used to pay salaries or costs of attending conferences.
Application Process and Deadline
Electronic copies of the following documents should be submitted to Danielle Lefebvre by November 11, 2011:
  1. an unofficial copy of most recent transcripts from McGill University;
  2. an up-to-date CV;
  3. a two-page explanation of the proposed research project that includes
    • background information and rationale,
    • a clear objective,
    • proposed research approach including the specific role that the student will play,
    • anticipated significance,
    • explanation of how the requested funds will be spent, and
    • statement regarding why the project is interdisciplinary environmental research
  4. a confidential letter of support emailed directly from the research supervisor to Danielle Lefebvre that describes:
    • the research potential of the student,
    • the role of the student in the research process
    • the feasibility of the proposed research.
Commitments of Recipients of Awards
Recipients of the award agree to provide a paragraph summary of the research for inclusion on the MSE WebSite and promotional materials. Recipients and their supervisors agree to acknowledge the MSE funding in any publications emerging from the research.

Faculty of Arts Internship Awards

Faculty of Arts students with confirmed summer internships are also eligible to apply for these awards. These awards help off-set the costs of completing a summer internship.
